David Colquhoun

David Colquhoun

David Colquhoun knows how to entertain and captivate an audience. He spent four years performing stand-up comedy in Melbourne. David has written jokes, songs and poetry for some time and has spent the last four years teaching English as a second language to children and adults around the world. Having an interest in literature, the arts and entertainment, he has recently tried his hand at writing for children; Henry Wants to Fly is David's first published work. He hopes to inspire children to accept themselves for who they are and recognise the talents that make them unique. While we can't be good at everything, we can excel at many things.

There are many authors on David’s list of favourites, including John Keats, William Blake, John Steinbeck , J.R.R. Tolkien, and Dan Brown. While writing, David enjoys listening to the expressive rhythms of jazz or light rock. He is no stranger to the saxophone and acoustic guitar, among other instruments. Take an aptitude for improvisation, the ability to connect ideas and a commitment to craft, and you have a brilliant formula for weaving a story.

Henry wanted so much to fly. He is an ostrich, a bird, and birds fly. At least, all the birds that Henry has seen do. But try as he might, Henry couldn’t seem to take off from the ground. No matter how much the other farm animals would laugh at him, Henry wouldn’t give up. Until one day he realised his distinctive skill.

Flying is great. But every animal, winged or not, is special in their way. Henry Wants to Fly is a story about finding yourself and accepting who you are. Henry cannot fly as he wishes he could. However, when danger is ablaze, he realises that what he CAN do is impressive.

Henry Wants to Fly is David Colquhoun’s debut as a published author. The story of Henry the Ostrich sets an excellent example for children; it encourages them to embrace their strengths, be proud of themselves and their unique abilities. This book serves as a reminder that its ok if you don’t recognise your niche yet. Just keep trying and searching until you find it.
